Dead Until Dark/Living Dead In Dallas

If you’re at all into True Blood, I would recommend reading the books. I am only two books in, but they are great. I would go as far to say that they are even better than the show!

There is currently nine books in the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris.

Dead Until Dark is the first of the series. It’s an amazing story about Sookie, a girl who works in a bar and a vampire that she meets, Bill. It’s a love story with blood, blood and more blood. I think one of my favorite parts of the book is the fact that Tara isn’t really in it. I can’t say I’m that thrilled about her character in the show, so that makes me happy.

Living Dead In Dallas continues the story of Sookie and Bill and their mishaps and downfalls of Sookie being in love with a vampire. It is going along, somewhat, with the second season and the current season. As for the crazy queen lady, she is not in the book, thus far. Which makes that one HUGE reason as to why I’m liking the books more than the show.

As far fetched as this is going to sound, having the crazy queen lady not in the book makes the book more “believeable”.

Have you read the Sookie Stackhouse series? Do you want to start? Have you read the books, but not seen the show?

Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli

stargirlStargirl. What’s the first thing that comes to mind? A girl that loves looking at the sky at night? If so, then you’re wrong! Stargirl is a high school student who is home-schooled. She ends up going to the local public school and changing EVERYTHING. The way people act, think, and do things. (Don’t want to give too much away because I feel that most everyone should read this book.)

I believe this book is on the summer reading list for schools, which means it’s a “teen” book. But what an amazing story Jerry Spinelli has written. I’ve never read anything by Spinelli before. And thankfully, my friend got me this book for my birthday and to say the least, I read couldn’t put this book down!

There is a sequel to this book called Love, Stargirl which I can not wait to get!

Snuff

Snuff, written by Chuck Palahniuk

It took me well over a month, but I finished Snuff by Chuck Palahniuk. I really should have finished it in WAY shorter time.

Let me just say, I love the style of writing, I love his books, but holy crap did I get confused! I would recommened not getting into two different books and putting this one on the back burner.

This book is about exactly what the title says. Snuff, a snuff movie. To quote the back of the book –

“Six hundred dudes. One porn queen. A world record for the ages. A must have movie for every discerning collector of things erotic.”

“Didn’t one of us on purpose set out to make a snuff movie.”

I made sure to mark one of my favorite lines/paragraphs from the book.

“The closest thing that comes to how today felt is when you wipe from back to front. You’re on the toilet. You’re not thinking, and you smear shit on the back of your hanging-down wrinkled ball skin. The more you try to wipe it clean, the skin stretches, and the mess keeps getting bigger. The thin layer of shit spreads into the hair and down your thighs. That’s how a day like this, how it felt.”

If you felt a bit awkward reading that, don’t even THINK about picking this book up. Snuff was an alright book, I just wish I would have read it a bit faster and stayed focused. I would definately recommend this book to someone that is able to stomach this type of “talk”. :)

Multiple Blessings

Jon and Kate Plus 8 write a book..and then they divorce. Not really, but that seems the road that the gossip magazines want you to think.

If you don’t know who Jon and Kate Gosselin are, you must be living in a hole. Ok, maybe not. It just seems you don’t pay attention to any gossip tv or magazines (and for that, I envy you!). The Gosselins are the stars of Jon and Kate Plus 8.

Jon and Kate are a couple that had 2 twin girls, after trying for so long to have kids. When the girls were about 3, they went back to the doctor and got pregnant again. This time, Kate got pregnant, but with SIX!

multipleblessingsTheir book, Multiple Bles8ings: Surviving to Thriving with Twins and Sextuplets, is all about the ups and downs of parenting 8 children.

After reading this book, I’ve learned about ALL the doctors visits and troubles they had getting pregnant. Which I pretty much knew, seeing as though most women don’t get pregnant naturally with 6 kids. The new season of the show As Saturday Night Live said, they are going to have 2 shows: Jon Plus 4 and Kate Plus 4.

The Gosselins had quite a bit of financial troubles, but who wouldn’t with 8 children. They didn’t have enough transportation for all 10 members of the family to fit into one vehicle. Jon had lost his job and they were lucky enough to have lots of volunteers to help out around the house with the babies.

Kate, being a nurse, was able to give the babies shots so as to not have to load them all in their non-existent vehicle to take them to the doctor for a few months.

Every time I picked up the book to read more, my brain automatically thought, “Hmm, that’s strange that the book came out and then there were all these rumors about Jon cheating. Could this possibly be due to wanting press for the book/show?”

Do you watch Jon and Kate Plus 8? How do you think they will deal with all this cheating drama in the show? Will the ignore it? Should they ignore it?

Currently Reading — The Woods by Harlan Coben

I have not been reading nearly as much as I like to. But the latest book that I have been reading makes me not want to put it down! The Woods by Harlan Coben is a wonderful written mystery. As soon as you figure something out, of course, something else HUGE happens and you just HAVE to know what happens. Which is what makes this so well written.

The Woods

The back cover of the book reads:

“County prosecutor Paul Copeland is still getting over the loss of his sister twenty years ago — the night she walked into the woods, never to be seen again. Now, as Cope struggles to raise his six-year-old daughter alone and try one of the biggest cases of his career, evidence links him to a man who has been viciously murdered. The victim could be the boy who disappeared along with Cope’s sister. And, as hope rises that his sister cold still be alive, dangerous secrets from his family’s past threaten to tear apart everything he’s been trying to hold together..”

The Woods has a couple of inner stories that go side by side along with the main story line.

I have finished the book! And it has a WONDERFUL ending — not something that you really see coming at all. I can not WAIT to read another Harlan Coben book!

If you are interested in mystery books I HIGHLY recommend The Woods.

Harlan Coben has written many other books — including a series of 9 books about a man named Myron Bolitar (the newest one to be released March 31st). I have read two of those books and can not wait to read the others!

Can You Keep a Secret?I am currently reading Can You Keep a Secret? by Sophie Kinsella. I am two chapters in and like so far. But then again, I am a sucker for a good chic-lit book.

–Updated Friday, January 23, 2009– I am only to chapter five, as I haven’t been reading nearly as much as I would like to. It’s not that I can’t get into the book, it’s just that after reading “No Time For Goodbye”, this book just doesn’t add up (even though they are two TOTALLY different books)..Can You Keep a Secret? is still quite enjoyable..yet, I’m not sure if I’ve read it before..more on that later.

No Time For GoodbyeI just finished reading No Time For Goodbye by Linwood Barclay.  A girl’s father, mother and brother leave their house one morning, no note left, no phone call, nothing. Go to twenty five years later and what happened is still unsolved. It was the type of book that you just don’t want to put down. Definately a must read for anyone that likes mystery.
